🔪 Safe Knife Handling
- Grip: Always use a firm grip on the handle with your fingers curled around the blade for control (known as the "pinch grip").
- Cutting Surface: Use a stable, non-slip chopping board. Avoid cutting on glass or metal.
- Focus: Always cut away from your body and never rush while slicing.
- Knife Position: Never leave knives in a sink or submerged in water where they can’t be seen.
💡 Tip: Use your knuckles as a guide when chopping to protect your fingertips.
🧼 Cleaning & Maintenance
- Hand Wash Only: Always wash knives by hand with mild soap and warm water.
- Dry Immediately: Prevent rust and water damage by drying with a towel right after washing.
- Avoid Dishwashers: Heat, moisture, and detergent can damage the blade and handle.
- Sharpen Regularly: Use a honing rod between uses and sharpen with a whetstone or professional service when dull.
📌 Note: A sharp knife is safer than a dull one. Dull knives require more force and increase the risk of slipping.
🗃️ Safe Storage
- Knife Blocks: Ideal for home kitchens – keeps knives safe and organised.
- Magnetic Strips: Wall-mounted strips keep blades dry and accessible.
- Blade Covers/Sheaths: Essential for drawer storage or transporting knives.
🚸 Household Safety
- Keep Out of Reach: Store all knives away from children or vulnerable individuals.
- Use Responsibly: Knives are cooking tools, not utility tools. Never use for prying, unscrewing, or outdoor tasks unless specified.
- Safe Disposal: If a knife is damaged beyond repair, wrap it securely before discarding or recycling.
